The Value of purified water testing


Not all steps in your water purification process will be designed to reduce the microbial levels in the water. Some steps may even produce the right conditions for bacterial regrowth if they are not properly maintained, if they are too large for your normal throughput, or if they are incorrectly connected to other steps.

Additionally, your treatment process can become contaminated with microbial growth the point of use. Or biofilm could develop above the normal water-level in your tanks due to high levels of condensation or splash-back. Once on these surfaces, it can be difficult to treat as they are not typically accessible during routing decontamination, as they are situated above the water level.

WHO Guidance on HPC Water Testing

"(Microbial) Growth is typically reflected in higher HPC values measured in water samples.

Elevated HPC levels occur especially in stagnant parts of piped distribution systems, in domestic plumbing, in bottled water and in plumbed-in devices, such as softeners, carbon filters and vending machines.

HPC measurements can be used to monitor the performance of filtration or disinfection processes.

In piped distribution systems, HPC measurements are assumed to respond primarily to distribution system conditions. These arise from stagnation, loss of residual disinfectant, high levels of assimilable organic carbon in the water, higher water temperature and availability of particular nutrients.

- to indicate the effectiveness of water treatment processes, thus as an indirect indication of pathogen removal;


- as a measure of numbers of regrowth organisms that may or may not have sanitary significance"
